Figure 1 – Recent PBS growth
In the 12 months to 31 March 2011, the overall growth in PBS expenditure was just 2.8%, with prescription volume growth actually going backwards at -0.8%. This is the lowest growth seen in recent years.

PBS as a proportion of Australian GDP has remained steady between 0.6% and 0.7% of GDP in the last ten years.

The ten year average growth in PBS in the last decade (2000-2010) was one of the lowest since the 1980s and is trending downwards.

According to Government’s own estimates, the real growth in PBS expenditure is likely to remain low in the foreseeable future.
